These 4 things helped me stop stress for GOOD

Stress: It's all too common in a world full of busy, but that doesn’t make it okay. Here are my favorite tips to survive stress when you feel it taking over.

#1: Move ya body.

Remember Elle Woods? "Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. Happy people just don’t kill their husbands!” She was onto something, people! 

Keep in mind that what your body needs is going to be different every day, and it’s not necessarily going to be what Nancy-Namaste-a-lot is doing. Yesterday, I taught a 45-minute intense cardio dance class. Today, I took a 45-minute walk in nature with my pup. Sometimes it’s a boxing class to gangster rap or a YouTube yoga class. Make it work for you, but planning ahead is key. I write down my workouts for the week on Sundays. 

But look, I get it! Sometimes you can “do you” and still feel in a rut. Enter: your bestie.

#2: Do something nice for a friend.

You know who’s the happiest person in the world? Oprah. Why? Because whenever Big O is in a rut, she literally scrolls through her contacts thinking, “Who can I do something good for today?” The same goes for us non-billionaire media moguls. If you’re feeling super blah, doing a good deed is going to fill your heart up. 

#3: Embrace the 5 by 5 rule.

The past is in the past, babe. The future’s in the future. All we’ve got is now. 

But, knowing that doesn’t make stress easier to deal with. So what can we do?

I’ve learned to embrace the 5 by 5 rule: if it’s not going to matter in 5 years, don’t spend more than 5 minutes stressed by it. So, be stressed for 5 minutes - really! Allow yourself to be angry, frustrated, sad… then, sit up straight, shoulders back, heart open. Take a deep breath in and know that all you can control is this moment.

#4: Bring in the good stuff.

If you’re stressed because of negative things going on around you, what positivity can you bring in? Writing down what you’re grateful for? Some dance moves at your cube in the office? Find that positive thing that will just bring you one tiny, incremental step forward.
